Educational Psychology Service

Micklegate, York

Description

The Educational Psychology Service works collaboratively with schools and settings, including early years settings, colleges and post-16 providers, to improve the educational outcomes, emotional well being and personal development of children and young people through the use of psychology. We offer a consultation-based approach to service delivery, which means that we talk with staff, parents/carers, children and young people and other professionals to find the best ways of supporting children and young people aged 0-25 years with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), always taking their views into account. Following initial consultation with key adults, we may decide to assess children and young people’s needs in a variety of ways, including observation and/or direct assessment work.
For those with the most complex special educational needs, who have an Education Health and Care (EHC) Plan in place, we have statutory duties to monitor progress and provision up to the age of 25 years if they remain in education or training.
We provide training for professionals, voluntary groups, parents and carers and undertake project work to improve teaching and learning. We also have a role in giving advice to the Local Authority on a range of areas relating to SEND and vulnerable children/families.
All Educational Psychologists employed by City of York Council are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and can be found on the HCPC website www.hcpc-uk.org.uk/ as 'practitioner psychologists'.
The core service is free for Local Authority schools, Academies, post-16 providers including colleges and early years settings. Additional services, such as training, supervision/support to staff and whole-school strategic work can be purchased (please see our traded training brochure on website for further information).
