York Racial Equality Network (YREN)

Clifton Ward, York

York Racial Equality Network (YREN) is a local group that works to promote awareness of the needs of black and minority ethnic people in the York area. It provides independent, impartial information and mutual support to people who are experiencing racial harassment, victimisation, discrimination or isolation. It also provides information and resources for individuals and organisations on race equality issues.
YREN Outreach work – an opportunity for collaboration
York Racial Equality Network (YREN) has provided an information, support and advocacy service for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) people including refugees and their families for many years. This service is available to anyone who can benefit from it, and is unique in offering a holistic approach to supporting BME people to meet a wide range of needs. The service is tailored according to the individual’s needs and can include:
• Information – about available services, support and facilities in York, including referral and signposting to other services where needed.
• Support – a listening ear, encouragement and emotional support.
•Advocacy – acting as an intermediary to help the individual access other services, including health, education, employment, social care and voluntary sector services.
Some enquiries can be resolved through a short phone call. Others, particularly those with more complex issues such as refugees or others newly arrived in York, can receive casework support over a number of months.
Thanks for new funding, YREN Is able to offer this service through Outreach work across the city, with the aim of reaching more individuals particularly those who may not be aware of its work.
Outreach work can take the form of regular sessions at a particular venue, one-off sessions to appropriate community venues or groups, and individual sessions away from YREN’s base (for example home visits).
YREN is keen to explore with partners how its flexible Outreach work can support the people you work with, for example:
• By providing a regular session at your venue or activities where BME people can access information and support that you are not currently able to provide.
• By attending your group meetings on an ad hoc or one-off basis to raise awareness of the range of help available to people.
• By setting up referral arrangements for individuals you work with, who may benefit from YREN’s support.
If you would like to discuss this work further, please email ritasanderson@yren.co.uk or telephone the YREN office on 01904 642600
