The British Red Cross - Connecting Communities

Rural West York, York

The ’Connecting Communities’ Service at the Red Cross (funded by the Co-op), is designed to support adults (18 years and up) across York, who are feeling lonely or socially isolated. As the Community Connector, I conduct initial assessments upon receipt of referrals, and then matching up volunteers with service-users, who will then deliver a package of support tailored to each individual (for up to 12 weeks initially):-
- to build their confidence and self-esteem
- to reconnect with their community
- to revisit past or identify new interests with a view to building meaningful friendships
Our research shows that loneliness is closely linked to changes in life circumstances, for example, people going through ‘life changing’ trigger points as listed below:-
- young new parents
- Bereavement
- Health issues/mobility limitations
- Divorce/separation
- Retirement or children leaving home
Volunteers will carry out a range of activities, including signposting to other agencies for specific support needs, and travelling with them to groups/community activities until they feel confident enough to do this independently.
