Child Poverty Strategy

The City of York had a statutory obligation to have a strategy which ran until 2020 to eradicate child poverty by 2020. This ambition was laid out in the Child Poverty Act and passed into law in March 2010.

Going forward, although we do not have a specific Child Poverty Strategy, you can find further information about York's approach to continue its hard work in supporting our most vulnerable families and children via the multi agency work within the Local Area Teams and partners. Visit our Early Help Strategy for further information.

You can still find information on the previous strategy by expanding the City of York Child Poverty Strategy below.

Information on previous child poverty strategy

Partners in York have been working together to produce on a city wide strategy to help reduce child poverty in York.

The strategy has been agreed and will launch later in 2011.

The strategy builds on the partnership work developed in the city & is based on the following principles:

  • Child Poverty is everybody's business
  • Children are brought up within families - so the strategy will have a 'Whole Family' approach and will support family relationships & family life'
  • Work is the best route out of poverty, but to combat in - work poverty, there needs support for parents to access, maintain & progress in work.
  • Strategy is based on evidence of the causes & consequences of poverty
  • Strategy will facilitate Early Intervention & prevention while focusing on most vulnerable.
  • Promote excellence in delivery, working with all partners to ensure that ending poverty is a priority
  • Ensure sustainability, cost effectiveness & affordability of the strategy
